Writing - Thesis Guide for MA students: Comprehensive Exam

MAT & MAB Comprehensive Exams

In addition to the thesis and defense, the MA candidate in Theology and Biblical Studies also takes a comprehensive exam which consists of a three hour written examination with two parts:

  • Part One consists of fifty objective questions to evaluate the student’s basic knowledge of Roman Catholic Theology.
  • Part Two consists of five essay questions, of which the student will write on three.

The student must receive a combined grade of 70% or better to pass.

Students may obtain sample exam essay questions and a bibliography to assist with study and review by contacting Fr. Ryan Ruiz, Dean of the School of Theology.

For our lay students, be aware that usually questions for Part Two will be chosen only from the classes you took at the Athenaeum.
