Reference, special collections, and periodicals are not available to check out. All other materials are generally available for circulation.

Students and faculty are also permitted to request items from the OPAL and OhioLINK catalogs and Interlibrary Loan. Guest patrons do not have this privilege. Guest patrons may seek ILL service from their local public library.

Guest Loan Period:

Search Ohio - 3 weeks, 4 renewals

Faculty Loan Periods:

Maly Library, OPAL, OhioLINK - 6 weeks, 6 renewals
Search Ohio - 3 weeks, 4 renewals

NOTE: If there is a hold on an item, you will not be able to renew it.

When the due date has passed, you will receive an overdue notice. Please do not ignore the overdue notices; respond in some way to any overdue notice you may receive. On the third notice you will see a replacement cost and processing charge for the item. We require payment for items not returned. If you return the item in a timely manner, the replacement cost and processing charge may be reduced or waived. When you receive your third notice on any item, you will be blocked from checking out any other items until you have returned the overdue item and cleared any fines.

If you have overdue items, please renew them in person, over the phone, or online.

Maly Library does not charge fines for late items, only lost items. However, late OPAL and OhioLINK items accrue fines at $.50 a day.

Patrons will receive a courtesy e-mail 3 days before items are due. Please renew or return items when you receive this courtesy email. You can renew items in person at the library, over the phone (between 8 am and 5 pm Monday-Friday), or online through Maly Library's website.

To renew online:

  • Go to
  • Click on the Library tab on the right side
  • Click on the Your Account link on the left side
  • Enter your name (Last, First) and library barcode number. Your barcode number can be found on your library card.
  • Click Submit
  • To view items charged on your account, click the Checked Out Items button
  • Due dates for each item are located in the Status column. Click the Sort by Due Date button to organize your checkouts by due date.
  • To renew a single item, check the box next to the item in the Renew column, then click the Renew Selected button.
  • To renew all of your items, click the Renew All button
  • Click Yes to confirm your renewal
  • The next page will inform you of your new due date or any problems during the renewal process
    NOTE: Your items are not renewed until you reach this final step. If you have any questions, please call the library and speak to a staff member.

Only Athenaeum students and faculty can access the library's research databases from an off-campus location. In order to view these resources, the user may be required to authenticate by submitting their name and library card number.

Guests may access the online databases when they visit Maly Library.

All patrons can access the Maly Library catalog from anywhere.

Students, staff, faculty, and alumni of the Athenaeum of Ohio are our primary patrons.

We also welcome clergy and parishioners of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, residents of the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area, OPAL and OhioLINK visitors, and faculty and registered students of ATLA (American Theological Library Association) member institutions. Guest patrons must present identification and fill out a registration form to obtain a library card. A current email address is required. 

PLEASE NOTE: If you are a card holder with any one of our affiliated OPAL or OhioLINK libraries, you do NOT need to establish a Maly Library card. You may borrow from our shelves using your "home library" card. You will be required to have your card IN HAND at time of check-out.
