Bible Resources: Commentaries, Dictionaries,
and Concordances

Available in Reference and in Stacks at 220.77 A539. Known as the Anchor Yale Bible after 2008, this series was begun in 1963 as a project of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish scholars. Eighty-six volumes have been published and many older commentaries have been replaced by new editions. The volumes vary in quality and some of the first published are becoming outdated. Each volume contains an original translation, annotations and variants; sets the historical, critical, and literary evolution of the text; provides a detailed outline; a verse by verse commentary; an analysis of various interpretative approaches; presents the historical background including authorship and dating; and provides an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary literature.

Complete 29 volume set includes the scriptural text, followed by an overview of the patristic writers who comment on the passage and excerpts of their writings. Citations to the patristic authors' complete works are provided.

A critical and historical commentary series on the Old and New Testament by authors who are recognized international experts. The series is ongoing with published volumes being revised as necessary and at times older volumes replaced by new works to present the latest in biblical scholarship. A subset of the collection is available on CD at the library service desk.

This series provides the complete English (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) and Latin (New Vulgate) texts of each book of the Bible, plus extensive and faithfully Catholic explanations of the scriptural texts. Compiled by the faculty of the University of Navarre, the commentaries draw on a variety of sources: Church documents, the writings of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and the work of prominent modern spiritual writers, chiefly St. Josemaria Escriva, who initiated this project.

A critical exegetical series by various biblical scholars writing from a scholarly as well as an evangelizal background. Contains some Greek words. Does not require a knowledge of Greek or Hebrew although offers this level of analysis for scholars.

This Old Testament series reflects the latest developments in a relatively new method of biblical study: literary criticism. The authors approach the books of the Hebrew Bible as literary works.

The New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT) aims to provide an exposition of Scripture that is thorough and abreast of modern scholarship, yet at the same time loyal to Scripture as the infallible Word of God. Each commentary opens with an introduction to the biblical book in question, looking especially at questions concerning its background, authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology. A select bibliography also points readers to resources for their own study. The author’s own translation from the original Hebrew and Greek texts forms the basis of the commentary proper. Verse-by-verse comments nicely balance the in-depth discussions of technical matters—such as textual criticism and critical problems—with exposition of the biblical writer’s theology and its implications for the life of faith today.

A planned seventeen volume New Testament commentary series, the CCSS aims to show the relationship of Scripture to Catholic doctrine, worship, and daily life. This series presents a theological and pastoral hermeneutic rather than a focus on technical questions. Accessible and scholarly, the CCSS provides the text of the NAB and cross-references to Scripture, Catechism sections and Lectionary uses of the text. As of 2012, seven volumes have been published.

An eighteen volume New Testament commentary series on the twenty-seven books of the New Testament by the foremost Catholic biblical scholars including Brendan Byrne, Raymond Collins, Daniel Harrington, Wilfrid Harrington, Luke Timothy Johnson, Frank Matera, Francis Moloney, and Donald Senior. Each volume presents a detailed introduction followed by a new translation by the author along with detailed commentary, notes and bibliography.
