MTSM Citation Guide

A guide to using the notes-bibliography style of Turabian citation at MTSM.

About Zotero

Zotero is a free online tool to help you organize and cite your research sources. Some highlights:

  • With the Zotero Connector for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari, it's simple to create new items from information available on the internet, including the library catalog and databases. You may also manually add items.
  • Zotero properly formats citations in many different bibliographic styles, including Turabian.
  • Zotero's Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs plugins allow users to insert citations directly from their word processing software.
    • NOTE: Zotero does NOT work with Word 365 (the online version of Word)
  • Using the word processor plugins makes it possible to automatically generate a bibliography from the items cited for the entire document with the click of a button.

Maly Library Suggestions

After downloading Zotero and Zotero Connector, open Zotero on your desktop and go to Edit - Settings -

  • Sync: create an account or link your existing account. Check all Sync boxes. This saves your sources in the cloud and allows you to access and sync all your sources across different devices.
  • Cite - Style Manager: look for Turabian 9th edition (notes and bibliography). If it's not there, click on Get additional styles to find it.
  • CIte - Word Processors: check the box that says Use classic add citation dialog.

The most important thing to remember with Zotero is that the information you add (yellow highlighted below) MUST be accurate AND conform to the General Rules or the specific rules we provide for items such as reprints, ecclesial documents, classic works, and liturgical books. It will then output footnotes and bibliographies correctly.
